The only variable that I can think of that was even remotely different is that I had downloaded and was playing with the Papal State mod for the first time when I saved and closed, but I've never heard of it causing this issue for anyone (I've seen it crashed the game for other people mid-game, but not render the game un-loadable). I don't have the best computer in the world but I can usually even have other smaller programs open at the same time as Civ and it never has an issue, even late-game with planes flying every direction. I'm just baffled as to what could cause it to become beyond-unplayable literally overnight. Normally I would just go to civfanatics for assistance but they're still migrating their servers. I uninstalled and reinstalled the game: nothing. I verified the integrity of the game cache: nothing. But then on Wednesday, having done absolutely nothing to anything on my computer (no updates, downloads, installs, etc) it won't even let me go to the main menu, crashing at the screen displaying the ESRB info just after loading. I played on Tuesday, like I do every night, with no problems (like every night).

I know Civ obviously isn't super-optimized to play on a Mac (or any other game for that matter) but I need to use one for school/work (Final Cut, Pro Tools, etc.) and Civ5 is literally the only game I even play, never having a problem running it at a smaller resolution with the graphics turned down (without ever having to consider resorting to strategic view even). I've had Civ 5 for many years now and been able to play it with no issues whatsoever, until yesterday.
